Summer
By William P. Robertson
Summer is the season of noise
on the fifth moon of Ore
when bauxite excavation
rents mauve soil.
Steam shovels grind endlessly
as operators pull triple shifts
like drones in a sci-fi flick.
Foremen cuss in cinderproof suits
praying volcanoes stay dormant
beneath the boiling bayous.
The last eruption devoured
a whole month’s toil
and woke pterodactyl mosquitoes.
A hundred blood men were lost
before laser arc defense craft
could be summoned
from the home planet.
William P. Robertson is a freelance writer from Duke Center, Pennsylvania. His poetry, articles, and short stories have appeared in over 490 magazines worldwide. He is most well-known, though, for the seven-novel series he co-wrote with David Rimer about the 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteers–The Bucktails–that fought in the American Civil War.
